General Dentistry

It’s really important that you attend regular dental checkups because neglecting your oral health can lead to a number of diseases affecting the teeth, gums and maxillofacial area (face and jaw), amongst other things. Unfortunately, many patients do not visit their dentist until they are already experiencing symptoms when it’s far better for you to have regular dental checkups before something goes wrong because, as they say, prevention is better than cure. That’s where general dentistry comes in.

What is general dentistry?

General dentistry is all about keeping your teeth and gums in good condition. On average, patients should visit the dentist twice each year for routine checkups and hygiene appointments. However, you may need to come in more often if you have significant dental issues, or in the case of a dental emergency.

Some of the things New Dimension Dentistry offers as part of our general dentistry services include:

Regular Exams

Dr. Giraldo, here at New Dimension Dentistry offers regular dental exams that will help to keep your teeth and gums healthy and ensure that any problems are dealt with swiftly. She will take the time to check each and every one of your teeth using professional dental instruments to ensure that any abnormalities are quickly spotted.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Dr. Giraldo’s objective is to do everything in her power to ensure your oral health is optimum. That’s why she offers high-quality oral cancer screenings, which will allow you to catch the signs of cancer at an early stage. When oral cancer is caught early, it is far easier to treat, which is one of the most important reasons for having regular dental checkups.

X-rays

At New Dimension Dentistry, we are lucky to have a state-of-the-art digital X-ray system on site. This enables Dr. Giraldo to take x-rays of your teeth and gums, and be able to look at them, in a matter of seconds, which means faster diagnostics and less time in the office for you. More importantly, our x-ray machine emits 90 percent less radiation than other systems, which means you won’t be exposed to nearly as much radiation.

Periodontal Disease Screening

Periodontal disease is one of the fastest-growing dental issues in the US, and we see a lot of patients experiencing this disease of the gum and bone regularly here. That’s why when we’re carrying out our general dentistry duties, we will always check patients for signs of bone and gum loss, making sure to measure above teeth and inside gums for a full picture of your dental health.

Tooth-colored Fillings

If you need to have cavities cleaned and filled, tooth-colored fillings can create a natural finish. White fillings, also known as composite fillings, use a tooth-colored resin created with plastic and powdered glass resin to fill cavities. This will blend with your surrounding tooth structure, ensuring your smile looks natural. It makes your fillings invisible to the casual observer, which is not the case with standard silver amalgam fillings.

Dental Bridges

If the gap in your smile has reduced your confidence and has been getting you down, dental bridges can ensure you are proud of your smile. Dental bridges are ideal for anyone who has gaps between their teeth or missing teeth. Not only do dental bridges offer aesthetic benefits, but they also ensure even bite forces and keep your teeth close together and your jaw strong and healthy. We provide several different bridges, from traditional to bonded bridges.

Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a cap that is placed on top of a tooth to restore it to its normal shape, function, and size. The purpose of this is to improve the appearance and/or strengthen the tooth. Dental crowns are recommended to cover a discolored tooth, restore a fractured tooth, protect a weak tooth from fracturing, and restore a tooth where there is not enough tooth remaining to provide support for a large tooth filling. Dental crowns are made in many materials, including composite and porcelain resin, metal, and gold.

Dentures

Dentures are prosthetic devices that are designed to replace missing teeth. They fit comfortably over the gums to replace missing teeth and eradicate potential issues caused by gaps. Traditional dentures are removable, yet many designs are available today, some of which rely on clasping or bonding onto the teeth or dental implants. We will ensure that you have the right dentures for your needs, whether you need partial dentures for one tooth or a few missing teeth or a full set of dentures.

Tooth Extractions

There are many reasons why you may need to have a tooth extracted. This includes economic, structural, or positional reasons. Teeth are often removed because they are impacted, which means they cannot grow into their normal position. This is a common reason for wisdom teeth extraction. You may also have teeth removed to make room in your mouth before having another one of our dental treatments. Extraction can also be used to remove teeth that are broken or decayed. Extraction is less expensive than placing a dental crown or tooth filling on a decayed tooth, and so it is a popular choice for those teeth that are not in view.

Root Canals

A root canal is a treatment for repairing and saving a tooth that is badly infected or decayed. The pulp and nerve are taken out so the inside of the tooth can be cleaned and then sealed. If you do not have a root canal, the tissue around the tooth will become infected, and abscessed could form. We will perform an X-ray to determine whether root canal treatment is right for you.

Haven’t seen the dentist in a while?

A lot of patients who haven’t been keeping up with their twice-annual dental appointments are often nervous about visiting the dentist, and because their teeth are currently healthy, they don’t think they need to see a dentist at all. However, a big part of general dentistry is preventative care and patients who visit the dentist regularly typically have better dental outcomes than those who do not.

If you haven’t visited the dentist for a while, you shouldn’t let this put you off visiting us now, especially if you are experiencing signs of tooth sensitivity or decay, when visiting the dentist or not could mean the difference between having healthy teeth and tooth loss!

Dr. Doris Giraldo is always happy to see patients, whether they have been a patient of New Dimension Dentistry regularly for years or whether they haven’t seen a dentist in a while. She is able to carry out not only regular dental checkups but also the most important procedures that come under the umbrella of general dentistry. We are conveniently located in Midtown East NYC, and we are ready and waiting to get your oral health back on track.

What will your general dentistry appointment look like?

Usually, when a patient comes for their first visit, we will start by taking a full set of x-rays, which will allow Dr. Giraldo to see each and every one of your teeth in great detail. By studying your x-rays, she will be able to determine if you have any oral issues that might not be immediately obvious.

Following x-rays, some patients require little more than a routine tooth cleaning. However, some patients may have a significant build-up of plaque which means that they need to have an advanced scaling procedure, that not only cleans the visible part of the tooth but the area beneath the gum line too.

Apart from cleaning, you will need to have a thorough exam to check the health of your teeth and gums. Should any issues be found by Dr. Giraldo during this exam or upon examination of your x-rays, we will talk through your options with you and create a treatment plan to deal with any problems and get your oral health back up to standard as quickly as possible.
