Crowns Q&A

What is a dental crown?

Dental crowns are protective coverings that are designed to cover the entire visible portion of the tooth. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, including durable porcelain that can be tinted to match the surrounding teeth so they blend in beautifully.

When are crowns used?

Crowns have many functional and cosmetic purposes. Dr. Giraldo may recommend a crown to:

  • Cover cosmetic defects
  • Treat uneven tooth wear and improve the look of your smile
  • Protect teeth that are cracked, chipped, or fractured
  • Prevent fracture in a weak tooth
  • Cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth
  • Support a dental bridge
  • Protect teeth following a root canal procedure

How are crowns applied?

Crowns usually require two office visits. During the first appointment, Dr. Giraldo treats any issues with your tooth and removes a very small portion of the tooth’s surface material to make room for the crown so it fits comfortably. She then makes an impression of the tooth that’s sent to a lab specializing in state-of-the-art restorations.

A temporary crown is placed on the tooth during this appointment to provide protection and the tint for the crown is also selected.

Once the lab completes your permanent crown, you return to the office to have the temporary crown removed. Dr. Giraldo carefully cleans the tooth and attaches the crown using a strong dental bonding agent. She adjusts the bite and buffs the surface of the crown so you get a comfortable fit.

What is crown lengthening?

Some patients may need a crown-lengthening procedure if they don’t have enough tooth in place to hold a crown. You may need this procedure if you have broken teeth or teeth affected by tooth decay.

During crown lengthening, Dr. Giraldo reduces gum tissue and shaves down any bone so more tooth is visible above the gum’s surface. This allows space for your crown to fit well so it’s most durable and comfortable.

How should I care for my crown?

Care for your crowns just as you do your natural teeth. Keep up with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental checkups to ensure the crown, the tooth, and the surrounding gums all remain in good shape. It’s also important to avoid biting hard foods or substances like ice to prevent damage to the crown (or to your natural teeth).

How long does a crown usually last?

With proper care, today’s state-of-the-art dental crowns can last for 10 to 20 years.
