Veneers Q&A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are durable, tooth-colored coverings that are placed on the front surfaces of teeth to correct the appearance of cosmetic defects, including:

  • Gaps between teeth
  • Deep discolorations that can’t be corrected with whitening treatments
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that appear crooked
  • Uneven or worn tooth edges
  • Teeth that appear too small
  • “Gummy” smiles
  • Chips in teeth

Veneers can be applied to a single tooth or to multiple teeth as part of a complete smile makeover designed to improve the overall aesthetics of the teeth and smile.

Am I a candidate for veneers?

If you have smile complaints that are mostly cosmetic, veneers are likely the right choice for you. Prior to their application, Dr. Giraldo does a full dental checkup to make sure there are no other problems, such as cavities, that need attention.

Once any dental problems are addressed, you may be fit for veneers.

How are veneers applied?

Veneer applications usually take a couple of visits. During the first visit, about one-half millimeter of your existing tooth enamel is removed to make room for the thickness of the veneer.  This ensures that once the porcelain overlay is applied, it won’t extend above or over the edges of the teeth on either side.

Dr. Giraldo makes an impression of your teeth and selects a shade for the veneer that matches your coloring. She’ll then place a temporary veneer over the teeth to protect them while the impression is sent to a dental lab that specializes in dental veneers.

At the second visit, Dr. Giraldo removes the temporary veneer, cleans the teeth surface, and applies the permanent veneer using a strong adhesive. The veneers are gently buffed and the bite fixed so it feels natural and looks beautiful.

How long will a veneer last?

With proper care, including regular brushing and flossing and routine trips to the dentist, a dental veneer can last 10 or more years. It’s also important to avoid biting on hard foods or substances like hard candy or ice and to avoid using teeth as prying tools to prevent damaging the veneer (or your natural teeth).
